Pork-in-Loop

Pork-in-Loop offers a disturbing keyhole view on four cells where ambiguous, explosive characters are struck by a loss of memory, meaning and the ability to react.

In ten chapters T.r.a.s.h. presents a spatial photo album, a collection of tableaux and images in an assocation on the idea "Man has but one way to go: from original sin through pride to solitude and decay." Based on a concept of variation and metamorphosis, Order and Chaos become exchangeable. In an accumulation of mutual referances, a significance slowly unfolds.

PORK-IN-LOOP sabotages images and statements that approach us through the ether every day. A puddle of moral ruin is overflowing; a relentless supply of images showing thirst for power, abuse of power enters our living rooms. The only reaction imaginable is either a stubborn apathy or a frantic fantasy... Behold: the beast is human!

Press on Pork-in-Loop

Liberation (F)

T.r.a.s.h. holds audience in strangling grip

Pork-in-Loop by T.r.a.s.h./Productiehuis Brabant.
23 november in De Melkweg in Amsterdam. Tour

It is a miracle that only one dancer (Guilherme Miotto) wears a shoulderbrace reminding of a recent injury. The other six T.r.a.s.h. dancers don't even show traces of bruises. Knee protection? No way. Simply wham, clash, bang: well trained raw human flesh against the walls decorated with some corny wallpaper and a cold floor.
No mercy in Pork-in-Loop, the youngest performance of a surprising little dance club from Brabant, that arose in Tilburg four years ago from a shadowy underground scene in an artist factory in the south of Holland. Men grabbing females by both head and groin, dangerously dangling them in the air. If they don't throw themselves to the floor, someone else will. What begins as an erotic attempt of approach in no time deteriorates into a humiliation or rejection. It is a foaming at the mouth in dance in which the performers hold each other as well as the audience in a strangling grip.
Not in the least because two ladies (Ulrika Kinn-Svenson and Tegest Pecht Guido) and one gentleman (Alexandre Tissot) daftly throw performance lyrics towards each other and the public. about pride, loneliness and decay, about abuse of power and moral perdition and about life slowly disappearing.
It is not a merry message that T.r.a.s.h. proclaims with this hard-hearted performance. The cold they approach both each other and themselves with reminds of the recent Rollende Road Show of the just as young acting club Wunderbaum. The motto of that confrontating theater performance - 'bite or be bitten' - can easily be trasnferred to these seven fantastic performers.

No clue, but a downgoing spiral of decay
Not that one has a clue what T.r.a.s.h. is heading with Pork-in-Loop. The piece lacks a liberating feature. The message could have been a bit less foggy but with this downgoing spiral of decay, the performance does justify its title: it is a loop of carnal pigs, dressed up as humans gone way beyond on the paranoia scale.
This dressing up is a story on its own. The women enter stage regularly in green pumps or red slippers, in purple bathing suits or retro cocktail frocks. Thin and rather ridiculous outfits making the skin clash even harder to the stage walls.
But all this chill receives a warm sheen from the live bass notes from a deep clarinet (Henk Bakker) and the stretched melancholy of a cello (Jacqueline Hamelink). With their notes the two musicians catch the stammering lyrics in a net. And that is necessary for the characters in this performance clearly suffer from amnesia: their memories falter as fast as they come up. T.r.a.s.h. shows Man in Decay. An ominous report from the Province of Brabant.

T.R.A.S.H. brings theatre of violence, grief and exhaustion

Monday November 14, 2005 - In the performance ’Pork-in-Loop’ of the Tilburgse T.R.A.S.H. company violence reaches a - provisional - climax.

Tilburg
The Tilburg-based dance company T.R.A.S.H. has turned bringing the violence hiding inside the human body visual on stage into its trademark. this happens without any mercy. After all, to choreographer Kristel van Issum bodies are mere utility objects not to be handled with care. In the latest choreography ’Pork-in-Loop’ the violence reaches a proviosional climax for never before bodies crashed this frequently to earth, are mouths ripped open are dancers throwing fragile females around and are walls like the ropes of a boxing arena against which both men and women colide.

Mess
In this case this violence is completely in its place, for ’Pork-in-Loop’ questions the mess and the stupidity poured out over us by the media. On one hande it invokes agression and idiocy, on the other hand it triggers thirst for and abuse of power. The triumvirate Kristel van Issum, Arthur van der Kuip en Paul van Weert - the artistic conscience of T.R.A.S.H. - has created a bewildering world, a theatre of grief and exhaustion. In this hell of violence and madness the pretence of reality held up takes shape theatrically. Bodies distorted clashing down, screaming voices, false pathos, individuals fighting over power and also dry comedy teach us we are madder than mad.

Thrilling
Kristel van Issum c.s. have created a fantastic performance. ’Pork-in-Loop’ is not only confronting and thrilling, the production is tight as a drum theatrically as well. It is amazing toendure what the choreographer demands of her six performers, but most of all the way they carry out their duty. If they would stray but a little, the harm of injury would be immense. But again the dancers trained só well, that the violence they represent is merely functional. If only to teach us to be humble again.
